Neil deGrasse Tyson was asked, “If you could live forever would you?”

There is a famous Larry King interview when Neil deGrasse Tyson eloquently explains why he would not want to live forever. He said, “If you could live forever would you?” Then he added, “The way I look at it is the knowledge that I am going to die is what creates the FOCUS I bring to being ALIVE. The urgency of ACCOMPLISHMENT. The need to express LOVE now not later. If we live forever why ever even get out of bed in the morning because you always have tomorrow. That is not the kind of life I want to live.”

Marty and Ty had decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and stroll on the path along the Alexander River. They held hands while discussing the recent death of a young man from Freedom who by freak accident was struck by lightning while climbing the Teton Peaks. Marty was not religious and had a question for her very pious boyfriend. “Why, if there is a God, do we need to live a mortal life in the first place? The pain, the fear, the unknowns of physical life are sometimes overwhelming. For what purpose must we experience joy and happiness mixed with a healthy dose of tribulation? Why not just skip the travail and go straight to the eternal happiness.”

Ty chuckled, “I have often thought the same thing. But if you think about it, to have that sought after everlasting happiness it has to be earned and there will have to be a sorting. Especially if we want to have our own agency. The purpose of mortal existence is somehow tied to gaining a resurrected immortal body by first experiencing temporary physical law at the same time learning eternal moral law from the good and the bad of physical choices and experiences.

So, physical life is a necessary part of the progress toward everlasting life and also a time to be tested and sorted.” Marty trembled a little as she mentioned the sorting part. This prompted another concern, “If you could live forever, would you really want to?”

“I think eternal progression will be exciting and never boring. In life we learn to FOCUS on being ALIVE, to ACCOMPLISH, and to express LOVE. When we FOCUS on motivating faith that there is an everlasting ALIVE, we will not procrastinate because we know there would be an accounting. We will want to ACCOMPLISH great and wonderful things. We will want the ability to LOVE and be kind so we can live with kind and loving people. The Savior told us the number one most important commandment is in Matthew 22:37-40, ‘Love the Lord thy God with all they heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.‘”

Ty continued, “Why would I want to be ALIVE forever? Why? To live without fear. To be separated from those who do not want to LOVE or be kind. To compensate those who died young or had their lives wrongfully taken. To allow joy to those who had none on this earth. To ACOMPLISH things we cannot even imagine. To FOCUS on improvement and helping others progress. To be with those we LOVE for eternity.”

Marty hated to admit Ty always made things seem appealing. He had a good point and it did help explain why God’s plan requires faith and not full knowledge. Otherwise it would not be a true test of our true self.

Dark energy is to us like the elephant is to the blind men.

Dark energy is an unknown form of energy that affects the universe’s accelerating expansion.

Marty was up to her elbows in soap suds as it was her turn to do the supper dishes. Her mother, Kat, was drying the dishes and had a captive audience for another of her theories. Marty’s sisters and father had deserted Marty and were in the living room watching T.V.

“Dark energy could be the void mentioned in the Bible. You know where it says in the beginning the earth was without form and void;”* Kat was in her usual fine form.

In all fairness to her mother, Marty had started the conversation with, “Do you think the universe is infinite? It had to have a beginning, didn’t it? What would be the most fundamental of all our universe?” To which Marty’s mother had suggested the most fundamental of everything might be dark energy.

“Dark energy is to us like the elephant is to the blind men. You know the parable about the blind men who have never come across an elephant before and had to imagine what an elephant is by touching it. Each feels a part, one feels the leg and imagines a tree trunk, another the trunk saying it is like a large snake and another feels the tail describing a rope, etc. etc.” Kat motions with her hands.

Marty chuckled remembering the story with the lesson that we all have a unique view of the world.

Kat continued, “We call dark energy ‘dark’ because no one can see it. It is likely Einstein’s cosmological constant. I think it is what everything is composed of and has always existed, infinite energy and mass.”

“So, no beginning, always existed?”

“Yes,” Kat replied. “Like the scripture which tells us there is something fundamental that has always existed. You know the one that says, ‘Intelligence or the light of truth, was not created or made neither indeed can be.’** Light could be reference to energy and truth reference to mass and reality.”

Kat went on to explain how the dark energy intelligence could be void space made of endless positive/negative quantum of zero-point energy not in motion but vibrating between the two opposite charges. She suggestd it would take a Big Bang cosmic square root inflation (Root 2) to move some of the two vibrations of energy into motion with mass to create our universe from the location of a more progressive universe.

Marty flipped her mother with soap suds, “Mom where do you come up with these things?”

Kat just laughed. “No really. Someday, maybe in the future we will not be so blind when it comes to dark energy.”

This short side story agrees with same story and timeline as Chapter 5 of the novel, Marty’s Dark Matter. To learn more about this unusual book — click M. KASEY, AUTHOR, above. Paperback is the best way to read and understand the philosophy within the pages of the story of Marty’s life.
